All’inizio del marzo 1984 Madonna non era ancora la superstar che avrebbe conquistato il pianeta, ma una giovane cantante americana lanciata dalla Sire Records in tournée promozionale europea. Holiday, Lucky Star e Borderline iniziavano a girare tra radio, club e la nuova MTV, mentre in Italia appariva in programmi come Discoring.

Per farla conoscere anche nei Paesi Bassi, la Sire Records contattò il celebre fotografo Kees Tabak, chiedendogli di realizzare un servizio a una “nuova cantante chiamata Madonna”. Lei arrivò ad Amsterdam accompagnata dal fratello Christopher Ciccone e dai suoi ballerini, tra cui Erika Belle. Nessun entourage da diva: solo una ragazza affamata di successo, con un carisma già evidente.

Tabak la vide entrare nel suo studio con quel look tipicamente downtown New York: capelli folti e spettinati, pizzi, maglie trasparenti, croci, trucco deciso e atteggiamento ribelle. Una miscela perfetta di punk, sensualità e stile urbano anni ’80. Il fotografo ricordò così quell’incontro: “Madonna si presentò con semplici vestiti, con quel look punk-pop underground di New York. Pizzi, magliette a rete, nastro di seta tra i capelli castani. Reggiseni trasparenti che lasciavano intravedere la sua abbondanza di seno. Dio, quanto era sexy! Era eccitante riprenderla con la mia macchina fotografica: stava davanti all’obiettivo come se volesse spogliarsi.”

Il giorno seguente Madonna tornò a vedere i provini. “Era molto sensuale, civettuola… sembrava avesse voglia di scopare.” Impressionato dalla sua presenza scenica, Tabak decise di organizzarle un secondo servizio fotografico. Stavolta però non vi erano Christopher ed Erika, ma un modello biondo... e il servizio che ne uscì fuori era un qualcosa di assolutamente erotico, sexy, quasi pornografico. Quelle immagini sarebbero poi finite su riviste di tutto il mondo: People, Playboy, Hustler, Men, Le Ore, Bravo, Sorrisi e Canzoni, Time, Star, Sun...

Riguardandole oggi, colpisce una cosa: Madonna non era ancora famosa, ma sembrava già sapere perfettamente chi sarebbe diventata. Nel marzo 1984, dentro uno studio fotografico di Amsterdam, il mondo non se ne accorse ancora. Ma una bomba pop stava per esplodere. E si chiamava Madonna.

When Amsterdam met a future legend

In early March 1984, Madonna was not yet the global superstar who would soon conquer the world. She was still a young American singer being promoted across Europe by Sire Records. Holiday, Lucky Star and Borderline were starting to gain attention in clubs, on radio, and on the new MTV, while she was also appearing on TV shows such as American Bandstand and European music programs.

To introduce her to the Dutch market, the record company contacted renowned photographer Kees Tabak, asking if he would like to photograph “a new singer named Madonna.”

She arrived in Amsterdam accompanied by her brother Christopher Ciccone and members of her early entourage, including dancer Erika Belle. No superstar treatment, no bodyguards—just a determined young woman with ambition and undeniable charisma.

The allure of pre-fame Madonna

Tabak saw her walk into his studio wearing that unmistakable downtown New York style: wild hair, lace, mesh tops, crosses, bold makeup, and a rebellious attitude. It was the perfect mix of punk edge, raw sensuality, and early ‘80s street fashion.

The photographer later remembered the moment this way:

“Madonna arrived in simple clothes, with that underground punk-pop New York look. Lace, fishnet tops, ribbons in her thick dark hair. Transparent bras revealing her generous figure. God, how sexy she was! It was exciting photographing her—she stood in front of the camera as if she wanted to undress.”

The next day Madonna returned to see the developed photos.
